Deep River by Shusaku Endo is a thoughtful read about some
pilgrims traveling to India ,
all having experienced different difficult times in their lives, and hoping to
find some deeper meaning to their existence. It is a very moving story! Interestingly, a movie called “The Best
Exotic Marigold Hotel” released in 2012 has a very similar premise; it is based
on a book called “These Foolish Things” written by Deborah Moggach’ and published
in 2004. To make things more complicated, Moggach seems to have been influenced
by Endo’s work earlier published in 1994 so I would love to know the true
origins of all three.
